Research and Development

Ann Wilson, Principal Analytical Chemist

In April 1995, I joined Domino as an Analytical Chemist.  I graduated from Sheffield in 1982 and worked as an analyst at both Pedigree Petfoods and Courtaulds Research. My area of specialism was chromatography, but when I joined Domino my new job involved other aspects of analytical work including spectroscopy and the wet chemical techniques.
In March 1997 I was promoted to Senior Analytical Chemist, and made responsible for the running of the Analytical facility, which was gradually growing and expanding.
In April 1999, due to family commitments, I went part-time.  Domino was very accommodating during this period and I was able to reduce my working day.

In 2003 I was promoted to Principal Analytical Chemist and I began extending my daily working hours with the view to becoming full time by January 2007.

Christina Bird, Analytical Chemist

I first became associated with Domino UK Limited back in August 1995.  Having just completed my first degree in Chemistry at Sheffield Hallam University, my tutor offered me the opportunity to complete a PhD.  Sponsored entirely by Domino, I spent the next three years analysing problems associated with dot matrix printing inks.  During my time at SHU, I gained many valuable, specialist skills; I became an expert in the analysis of nozzles by FTIR microscopy; I developed a novel method of sample analysis by combining GPC-LC Transform with SEM and I formed numerous professional working relationships within the field of Analytical Chemistry, many of which are still in place today.
Domino officially employed me in April 1999 as an Analytical Chemist in its Fluids department. My role within the department has changed significantly over the years and now encompasses greater managerial responsibility.  Part of my role is also to train new employees.  Historically, I have always designed training programmes based on personal experience and self-taught methods.  During an appraisal last year, I requested formal tuition with regards to training new team members.  As a direct result, I am currently part of the way through an “Introduction to Coaching Course” which, upon successful completion, will earn me an Institute of Leadership and Management Development Award.

Jon Morgan, Director of Development

I joined Domino as a Physicist in 1998 after working as a post-doctoral researcher in academia.  I was promoted to Senior Physicist in 1999 after the successful launch of our Bitjet product. Completing Domino’s internal management training course helped me adjust to my additional responsibilities.
Having successfully developed the droplet generator, I was promoted to Print Head Development Manager in 2000.  After 18 months in this technical management role, I spent the summer of 2002 working in manufacturing before returning to research and development management.  Completing Domino’s Senior Management Training Programme helped me work through a lot of business theory in a practical way and I completed an MBA in November 2003.  I was promoted to Director of Development in May 2004, shortly before being made a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in recognition of the work I have done in developing ink jet printers. I am currently responsible for the research and development of ink jet systems.

Rachel Hurst, Program Manager

I joined Domino from college as a Test Technician in 1990, and moved into manufacturing engineering whilst studying for an MSc in Engineering Business Management (sponsored by Domino). In this area I was involved in developing new products and introducing them into operations. I then went on to be a Product Manager in Marketing and helped launch the A-Series product range to our sales channels, which allowed me to travel extensively and gain commercial understanding of our industry.

After 4 years in marketing, I was offered a chance to work in operations running the printer factories, working with the teams to develop towards our World Class Manufacturing aspiration where we have won 2 national awards. Having worked within the whole value chain from requirements capture to delivery of product, I now have the opportunity to work with the development team once more. Program Management is a challenge, which pulls on all my experiences at Domino to date, to help with the launch of new products for the Company.
