Recently I had the privilege to be a part of the Domino team that attend Pack Expo Las Vegas 2019. With over 30,000 attendees, it was the largest and most attended packaging event of the year. Last year we took a bold step and brought attention to all attendees Industry 4.0 concepts and how they revolve around one common theme, “Integration and Data Collaboration”. This year we decided to take this one step further and make automation the key conversation in our booth.
Did you know that the number one reason for recalls is due to coding mistakes? Wrong labels, undeclared allergens, missing data has led to hundreds of recalls. In fact, if you totaled the number from the other top 5 recall reasons, coding mistakes are still the largest. This has cost industries millions, and for some, their business altogether. It is said that a person will make a mistake every 300 touches. Most of the time this is something that is caught and resolved, but it only takes that one time; that perfect storm where a mistake gets past and makes it out the door. So can this be prevented? We think it can, and for that reason our theme revolved around the message “Are you still entering codes manually?”. Line operators have enough on their plate: they need to make sure the line is always running , resolving jams, replenishing consumables, and getting the product out the door. Why pile on more work, like entering label information, when this can be automated?
At the show, we demonstrated various solutions from Barcode lookup, ERP Automation, all the way up to Cloud Integration. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and it is clear based on the conversations had at the show, automation is on everyone’s radar. Our booth was packed with interested customers wanting to know how they can eliminate human error. At our “Drink and Learn” event, we went in depth with solutions that not only would provide automated solutions for any size of business, but also illustrated how we do this by using industry standards like fieldbus communication, integration to ERP and SCADA systems, and cloud communication to Azure and AWS.
Those who attended were excited to see (and hear) that there is light at the end of the tunnel when tackling operator error without complicated, and expensive, proprietary systems. By partnering with a coding company that has embraced the key concept of Industry 4.0, the sharing of data through integration, one can start the process of eliminating coding mistakes and increasing OEE without breaking the bank.
Many have taken the first step and are having Domino work on solutions to help their company grow and progress. Are you ready to take the first step? Let us work with you and develop a path to full Coding Automation and eliminate recalls due to mistakes!
