Ax-Series - How to Calibrate the Ink and Make-up Level Sensors

Shut down the printer. Disconnect the power.

Used ITM and paper towels contain residual chemicals which are hazardous to the environment.

Follow local waste disposal regulations to safely dispose of the used ITM and paper towels.

Ensure the make-up cartridge, ink cartridge, ITM and MUM are removed from the printer.

If they are not removed, the printer’s zero fluid level will be reset to the wrong value.

  • A T10 torx driver is required for this procedure.
  • Paper towels (or similar) and wash are required for this procedure.

Step 1

Prepare the Printer

  1. Switch off (hold the standby button Power Button.png for 2 seconds) and wait for the printer to shut down.

  2. Disconnect the power lead from the rear of the printer.

  3. Open the door and remove the make-up cartridge.

  4. Remove the ink cartridge.

  5. Remove the ITM. Push retaining clips up then pull the ITM towards you, away from the Ink Block

    If the ITM does not move with moderate pressure, push the ITM away from you (which will break any seal caused by dry ink) and try again.

  6. Unscrew and remove the thumb screw that secures the MUM to the printer cabinet.

  7. Remove the MUM from the printer cabinet, take care to remove the make-up recovery tube.

Step 2

Calibrate the Ink Level and Make-up Level Sensors

  1. Reconnect the power lead to the rear of the printer.

  2. Switch on (hold the standby button Power Button.png for 2 seconds) and wait for the printer to start up.

  3. On the TouchScreen, select Home > Setup > Diagnostics > Tests.

  4. Run the Calibrate ink sensor test.

  5. Wait for the printer to calibrate the sensor.

  6. Run the Calibrate solvent sensor test.

  7. Wait for the printer to calibrate the sensor.

Step 3

Insert the MUM 

  1. Place paper towel or similar on top of the level sensor module to catch excess fluid and use wash to clean the valve face.

  2. Place paper towel or similar under the manifold pipes on the new MUM and lubricate the pipes with wash.

  3. Insert the MUM into the printer cabinet, insert the make-up recovery tube into the MUM and push the MUM’s manifold pipes into the ink block.

  4. Tighten the thumb screw.

Step 4

Insert the ITM

  1. Place paper towel under the ITM manifold pipes and lubricate with wash.

  2. Place paper towel or similar to catch excess fluid and using wash, remove any dried residual ink from the ink block valve face.

  3. Insert the ITM.

  4. Make sure the ITM retaining clips are correctly engaged.

    Ensure retaining clips are fully engaged - they will click into position.

    If you do not, then ink can spray out and onto the user.

Step 5

Insert the New Cartridges

  1. Hold the ink and make-up cartridge near the Quality Management Module (QMM) and check the QMM lights.

  2. Push the ink cartridge onto the ITM, or push the make-up cartridge onto the make-up module.

  3. Rotate the ink cartridge clockwise and the make-up cartridge anti-clockwise. Ensure that the label is facing towards you.

  4. Make sure that the cartridges are pressed flat against the Make-up Module/ITM connector. If there is a gap or the cartridge is not flat against the connector, the cartridge may overfill the Make-up module/ITM with fluid and cause an alert/fluid leak.

  5. Check for leaks inside the printer.

  6. Close the access door to the printer ink compartment.

Step 6

Prime the Ink System

Ink priming will take 12 minutes to complete.

  1. On the TouchPanel, select Home > Setup > Wizards > Ink priming.

  2. Select Start ink priming.

  3. Obey local regulations to dispose of contaminated paper towels and the old MUM.
