Domino Demonstrates the Benefits of QR codes powered by GS1 Through Real-World Implementation

Businesses across the globe are preparing for a fundamental shift in how products are identified, tracked, and communicated. Traditional one-dimensional barcodes have served industry well for over 50 years, but organisations are now beginning the transition to more data-rich, next generation barcodes, such as QR codes powered by GS1.

QR codes powered by GS1 – supported by the GS1 Digital Link standard – help businesses improve traceability, make product information easier to access and strengthen supply chain visibility, but implementation also brings new data, systems and operational considerations.

These next generation barcodes are designed to meet the evolving needs of businesses, regulators, and consumers. People want to know more about what they buy, from ingredients and allergens to provenance, environmental impact, and ethical sourcing. At the same time, brands and retailers need to provide accurate, real-time information across increasingly complex supply chains.

As manufacturers prepare for the transition to QR codes powered by GS1, Domino has taken a proactive approach by implementing the GS1 Digital Link standard across its global operations, with a QR code powered by GS1 on each of its products and consumables.

The initiative has enabled Domino to gain first-hand experience of the opportunities and challenges associated with adopting the QR codes powered by GS1, from data governance and system integration to the development of a GS1 Digital Link resolver capable of delivering product-specific information through a single scan.

Over and above product capabilities and reliability, Domino’s customers value the expertise that we bring to every solution engagement. We recognised that the best way to be able to support customers with QR codes powered by GS1 most effectively, would be to implement them ourselves.Craig Stobie, Global Business Development Director, Domino Printing Sciences.

By adopting QR codes powered by GS1 throughout its own operations, Domino has enhanced customer access to technical documentation, certifications, safety information, and reordering tools, as well as supporting improved traceability and reducing the need for multiple on-product labels. The project has also strengthened Domino’s ability to support customers as they prepare for wider industry adoption of QR codes powered by GS1.

The move to QR codes powered by GS1 marks an important step in the evolution of product identification, giving businesses the opportunity to connect trusted product data to physical products in a more flexible and accessible way. As a GS1 UK Approved partner, Domino is well placed to understand the practical considerations involved in implementing standards-based solutions. Its own rollout of QR codes powered by GS1 across its product and consumables portfolio gives the company first-hand experience of the data, systems and governance work that many manufacturers will need to consider as adoption growsMagda Dudziak-Ćwieczkowska, Head of QR, GS1 UK.
